Adult Ministry Groups

Sunday Afternoon

Walk to Emmaus Group
If you have been on a ‘Walk to Emmaus’, you might be interested in joining the 4th Day Emmaus group, now called Cross Works Emmaus. Their focus is to build community within the church. They meet on the third Sunday of the month from 4:30-5:30pm in the church narthex. For more information you may contact Nancy Bohlen at nbohlen@swiftel.net or call the church office at 605-692-4345.
If you have never been on a Walk to Emmaus you might want to consider this event.  It can be quite life changing.  Here is the link for the forms:

Monday

Singles Group
The group formerly known as the Open Door Single Group is opening its doors wider to include anyone (not just singles) who would like to meet to do a bible study!  They will begin meeting September 19 at 5:15 in the Sr. High Youth Room.  They will be meeting the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month.
The first study is entitled “Old Testament Stories from the Backside”. Books will be available the first evening.

Open Door Retired Bible Study Group
If you are in the retired category of life and are interested in being a part of a weekly Bible study, then we have just the group for you!
Starting September 12 at 6:30 the Open Door Retireds Bible Study Group will begin meeting in the church basement parlor.  The topic is yet to be determined.

SOUL – (Seniors of Unlimited Love)
SOUL is a group of retired people who would meet once a month on the last Monday of the month for a potluck meal.  They enjoyed each other’s fellowship and food!  They didn’t have any other agenda than to catch up with each other and enjoy their mutual fellowship.
They of course quit meeting during the pandemic.  But if you are interested in joining this group, their first meeting will be Monday, September 26 in the church basement at noon.  If you’d like to let Gretchen know if you are interested in attending when you can, you may call the church office or email at
education@brookingsmethodist.org. otherwise you can just show up!

Tuesday

Movie Night
The Tuesday Movie night is not quite ready to be back to watching movies together yet.  Please stay tuned for when they will start up again.

Wednesday

Adult Manna Study
We will be offering a Wednesday evening adult Manna study from 7:00-8:00pm.  We plan to coordinate the theme of the study with the Wednesday evening sermon.  This group will meet from 7:00-8:00 in the conference room.

Men’s Group
If you would like a place to talk with other guys about faith, family, daily trials, pressures, etc., this men’s group just might fit that bill! They are also a group which likes to ‘do’ as well as. So periodically they will do a service project around the church or wherever needed. For more information contact Gretchen at
 education@brookingsmethodist.org.

Friday

Men's Breakfast
Wanting to have some time with the guys? There is a group of men which meet every Friday morning at Hy-Vee at 6:30 am for breakfast and fellowship. That’s it – just fellowship and breakfast and out the door by 7:15! Join them any Friday morning.

Online Friendship Groups/Study Groups

If you are someone who isn’t quite ready to get back into meeting in person but would like to have more contact with your church family, we will gladly set up an online friendship group if there are enough people interested. Let’s not lose contact with each other! Please contact Gretchen if you are interested in joining such a group.

If your group is not ready to meet in person but would like to be able to have a study, we can help you set up a zoom meeting if that fits your needs. Let Gretchen know if you would like to meet virtually.

New Member Class

We want to start up a new members class! If you are interested in learning more about what it means to be a United Methodist and a member of our church, please contact the church office. We’d love to have you!

United Women In Faith

United Methodist Women is now United Women in Faith. The move is part of a refreshing of the organization that includes a new logo and an array of new and improved programs to nurture current members and welcome new women to join to put their love in action on behalf of women, children, and youth. The changes are designed to address the different needs and life stages of current members and new women and expand options for membership and engagement.

Brookings FUMC has approximately 30 members, and want to welcome anyone who has a heart for caring and sharing. We do visitations to all local Care Facilities and send card greetings to cheer many throughout the year. We offer an excellent reading program with suggestions for timely thought-provoking books. In addition to supporting various missions we routinely donate to back to school needs. We have committed to serving a Harvest Table meal in December.

We will be hosting a salad luncheon on September 18th  at 12pm to celebrate getting back together.

PieceMakers (Quilting Group)
Up to ten women meet in our church basement usually each month to make quilts.  These quilts are gifted to wrap people in our congregational love. These quilts are gifted for baptisms as the church family makes their promise to teach them to grow in Christ’s love; to wrap people in brotherly love that need comfort in illness or death of a loved one; to our graduates to remind them that the church family goes with them spiritually as they go out into the world; and to a few Head Start students that are in need of a quilt for their rest time at school. We usually distribute at least 50 quilts each year.
A group of 6 women started to sew and tie quilts each month. They give these quilts to the elderly in our congregation on their birthdays! Many have received a “birthday” quilt.
We could use some more “hands” to help give comfort and joy to our church family. Come for coffee and see what we do! If you would like to join both or either of the groups, please contact the church office, Barb Johnson (605-651-5980) or Judi DeZeuw (605-690-7564)

Healthy Movements Class

This activity is an exercise program taking place in the CLC each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 10:00 AM. Participation has been strong since early spring with anywhere from 9 to 15 individuals involved each day. The series of exercises directed toward improving balance and muscle strength is directed by one or more SDSU students who are members of the Exercise Science Club at SDSU. Besides exercising for about 30 minutes, participants have a chance to ask questions and express ideas about the movements or just visit with one another. Anyone is welcome to participate if you have a spare 30 minutes. It is not a strenuous activity, but it could sure make you feel better after the routine!

United Methodist Men (UMM)

Picture
UMM will meet on September 15, October 20, and November 17. We meet on the third Thursday of the month starting at 6:00pm for business meeting, 6:30pm is dinner, and 7:00pm will be a program.  UMM helps with Turkey Dinner, Harvest Table on November 28, supports Scout Troop 1 and perform other activities at church. Guests are welcome.

New Day Al-Anon

If a friend or family member has a problem with alcohol, you are welcome to attend the meeting.  Al-anon meets every Tuesday at 5:30 until 6:30 pm.  We use the North door and follow the posted signs just in case we move the meeting place.  We don’t meet if the Brookings schools cancel school.  Please contact Sandy Ballou at 605-692-1774 with any questions.

Alzheimer’s Support Group

Did you know our church parlor is the home for a caregivers’ support group? This group is sponsored by the American Alzheimer’s Association. We meet every third Wednesday morning of each month from 10-11 in the parlor. For more information regarding this you can contact Lisa Miller at 605-695-1371.
